Ion Dorobanțu is a Romanian guitarist from Timișoara. Although he was trained in formal classical guitar and currently is a lecturer in classical guitar at the West University of Timișoara (since 1998), his area of proficiency extends over other genres like blues, pop-rock, and especially jazz, mainly on electric guitar.
He is a graduate of “George Enescu” National University of Arts from Iași, in Music Interpretation, classical guitar (1997), and got his Ph. D. degree at “Gheorghe Dima” Music Academy from Cluj-Napoca (2014) with the thesis Guitar in Jazz - Expressiveness and Versatility.
Ion Dorobanțu is an active musician since 1995, playing classical solos or cameral repertoire, and standard jazz sets with his trio. He also started working with theatres in musicals - such as Full Monty, Cabaret or Maria de Buenos Aires, and production shows on cruise ships. He begins to compose and arrange for jazz formulas and recorded a CD with Astor Piazzolla’s Quintets (Nuevo Tango Quintet plays Astor Piazzolla – ANIVERTANGO, vol.1, 2012).
In 2019 he composed and produced a multimedia show named ”Apa sâmbetei”, on lyrics by Șerban Foarță.
He is frequently invited in Juries of national or international classical guitar contests, also in jazz festivals or venues. He is the founder and the artistic director of the TIMISOARA INTERNATIONAL GUITAR FESTIVAL since 2015.
